Introduction – What Is the Jing Luo System?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Jing Luo System refers to a vast network of energy pathways and vessels through which Qi (vital energy) and Blood (Xue) circulate throughout the body.
These channels form an energetic map connecting the internal organs (Zangfu) with the body’s surface, ensuring that Qi and Blood nourish every part — inside and out, above and below.
As described in the Ling Shu (The Spiritual Pivot), Chapter 11:
“Man lives, diseases occur… both the beginner and the master must start with the channels and network vessels (Jing Luo).”
This ancient statement emphasizes that understanding and working with the Jing Luo system is the foundation of all TCM diagnosis and treatment.
🔹 Functions of the Jing Luo System
1. Distribution of Qi and Blood
The channels and vessels are responsible for distributing Qi and Blood throughout the body.
They transport nourishment from the internal organs to the skin, muscles, and limbs, maintaining energy balance and vitality.
When the flow of Qi is smooth, the body remains healthy and resilient.
2. Regulation of Yin and Yang & Body Protection
The Jing Luo system helps regulate the Yin–Yang balance, enabling the body to adapt to internal and external changes.
It also acts as a protective shield, defending against pathogenic influences such as wind, cold, dampness, or heat (known as external pathogens in TCM).
3. Pathways of Disease Manifestation
When Qi and Blood are blocked, stagnated, or deficient, symptoms often appear along the channel pathways.
These signs can reflect:
-
Disorders within the channels themselves, or
-
Underlying dysfunctions of the internal organs (Zangfu).
For example, pain or stiffness along a meridian may reveal an imbalance of the corresponding organ system.
4. Clinical Applications
In clinical practice, acupuncturists and TCM practitioners use the Jing Luo network to guide Qi to specific areas of the body.
By stimulating acupuncture points along these pathways, practitioners can:
-
Remove blockages
-
Regulate Qi and Blood circulation
-
Relieve pain
-
Restore the body’s natural healing balance
At Dr. Tan Clinic, these principles are applied through acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion, and therapeutic massage, all designed to harmonize Qi flow and promote holistic recovery.
